Full of Beans Chapter 1

Beans and Kermit were collecting condensed milk cans for Winky who sold them to Pepe's. Here is Pepe's on Caroline Street, but the original Pepe's was on Duval Street.

Julius Stone, Jr. drove to Key West in a Ford Model 730 Deluxe V-8 sedan.

Beans says he recognized the car immediately from the newsreels. Newsreels were played before movies, like the previews are today, and showed all the latest news from around the world. Mr. Stone drives the same car that Bonnie and Clyde drove when they robbed banks, and that's how Beans knew about the car. Here's Bonnie and Clyde before they were captured.

Julius Stone, Jr. was a real person in Key West history. We'll learn more about him later in the story. Mr. Stone is the man on the right in the white suite. (No Bermuda shorts!)

  1. HI! I've enjoyed your site for years and am thrilled to see that you updated with Beans! I have a small motivated group of students who had already read Turtle, and I allowed them to differentiate and read Beans as an independent study. Your site is a great resource for them as they work through the novel indepently in a small literary circle while the rest of the class reads Turtle, usually in readers' theatre formate. I genuinely appreciate the work you put in, and the fact that it's public for other teachers to utilize. No sense in reinventing the wheel when you've done such a great job. You and I have a center-strong Venn diagram of literary interests :) I encourage you to follow #bookposse on Twitter and check out my blog (that I need to get back to...) https://worthnotingblog.blogspot.com/2017/08/refugee-by-alan-gratz.html Thanks again-- Laura Boyles

    1. Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts. I have so much fun making these resources, especially the Turtle in Paradise and Full of Beans pages because both times I got to take pictures in Key West. My trip to the Key West Firehouse Museum was fantastic, and the workers were surprised at the quantity and accuracy of the fire station and fire fighting scenes in Full of Beans. I will be sure to check out #bookposse and your blog. Thanks again!
